The New Symposium: Wine Drinking for Inspired Thinking

The philosophy behind a lot of team building seems to be something like this: You’ve been complaining that your job is very stressful. So we are going to take you out of your very stressful job for a day or two and make you do something even more stressful so that when we send you back to work you will stop complaining.

WineDrinkingThis exercise is based on a different philosophy of bringing people together: Create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere and then gently guide participants to get a glimpse of the creative spark in their colleagues and themselves. In the sometimes-soulless world of commerce we need to create an environment where the soul can shine; where we can gain insight and appreciation of the hidden depths of our associates and ourselves. The key is to do this without causing any unnecessary additional stress; and to avoid invasive, touchy-feely activities.

Fine wine and poetry are the perfect catalysts.

The forum for the birth of philosophy was a convivial gathering known as the Symposium. Symposium literally means “ to drink together.” In Plato’s Critias Socrates expresses the magic that happens when people gather together in a convivial environment to enjoy wine, poetry and music. “You will find that suddenly something extraordinary happens. As they are speaking, it’s as if a spark ignites, passing from one speaker to another, and as it travels it gathers strength, building into a warm and illuminating flame of mutual understanding which none of them could have achieved alone.”

This exercise involves a comparative wine tasting and poetry contest; (we usually arrange for a comparative chocolate tasting for those who don’t drink wine). Although most groups don’t think of themselves as poetic, after the second glass of wine everyone is a poet!

  • In my all my years of participating in team building events I’ve never experienced anything like this! We went way beyond the usual “consultant-speak” to discover a new approach to creativity and sensory awareness. My group of biochemists and pharmacologists all enjoyed the wine, and then translated their experience into poetry. In the process we all WOWed our colleagues into a new dimension! Emily Hickey, DVM, PhD – Merck & Co.

As Learning Chair of the Portland, Oregon Chapter of Entrepreneurs Organization, I coordinated, promoted and hosted the signature event of the year with Michael Gelb. It was without a doubt in my mind THE event of our year. The combination of poetry and wine inspired our group, and literally drew tears from many of our members. It was an evening we will never forget. Matt Burk, President – Fairway America

It’s by far the most fun we’ve had as a Faculty in the 30 years that I’ve been here. Prof. James Clawson — Darden Graduate School of Business after the Wine and Poetry exercise was held for the Darden faculty.

During breaks in our off-site meeting, everyone jumped on their cell phones to check messages, or logged into email. It was surprising, then, to see the cell phones turned off and the laptops put away as we enjoyed Michael’s wine-tasting and poetry exercise. No one complained about another lame team-building program, or missing a message. Instead, we all engaged in conversation that revealed more of ourselves, creating deeper bonds of trust. I’ve forgotten most of what we learned during the off-site’s other sessions, but I haven’t forgotten the poetry, or that evening’s conversations. Since then, I’ve recommended Michael’s unique approach to unleashing creativity to many colleagues, and can’t wait to take the refresher course. Richard Eckel, Microsoft
